Let’s Celebrate National Rose Month

Did you know that June is national rose month? While roses are most the popular on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, we think they deserve praise all year round. Do you love the beautiful flower but you’re not quite sure how to grow and maintain them? No worries, we have your back.

You can plant roses throughout the summer if you follow these steps:

Where should you plant roses?

When beginning to plant, choose a location where there is full sun coverage of six hours or more. Some roses only require partial shade, but most grow and bloom their best if they are in a spot that gets sun all day. Make sure the soil you plan on planting your roses in is rich and has good drainage since the roots will begin to rot if they sit in soil for days at a time. Also, take into consideration the amount of space you will be giving your roses. The more airflow around the plants, the less likely they will get fungal diseases like black spot or mildew on their leaves.

How should you plant your roses?

Early summer is the perfect time to plant your roses. Start by digging a hole that is slightly wide and remove the soil from the hole. Add some bone meal to the soil you removed so you can refill the hole with soil that will help the rose bush acclimate to its new home. Next, loosen the roots, if the rose came in a container, so they spread out when planted. Put the soil with bone meal into the hole and place the rose bush about one inch under the ground. Now that it’s summer, you can choose to leave the bud above ground since there is little chance of frost damage.

Water

Water deeply, meaning let the bush soak at least eight inches below the surface and water at least once per week to help get your plant established. After all, you’ve spent a lot of time and money making your garden and landscape look the way it does, so take the extra steps and water everything on a regular basis.
